Maniac Magee

You can use this link to do your vocab!  Vocabulary Sheet.doc

Day 1:  What is a Maniac?  How would you describe someone you think of as a maniac?  Why do you think people call Jeffrey Lionel Magee "Maniac Magee"?  Think about the qualities of superheroes you know and the exaggerated feats of courage and daring they perform.  Imagine what a talltale about a street kid of today might be like.   "Maniac Magee" is a modern day tall tale.  It mixes events that could happen in real life with exaggerated stories and outlandish accomplishments.  Read "In the Beginning".  What does the narrator mean when he says a kid's history is "one part fact, two parts legend, and three parts snowball."

Read Chapters 1-3 and create a title for each chapter.

Day 2: Why do you think Amanda gave Jeffrey one of her books--her most cherished possessions?  What was the title of the book she gave him?  Do you know what a crusade is?  Look up the word and then check out the link below about a children's crusade that took place in America not too long ago.  What was it about and when did it take place?  What other kinds of crusades do you know about?  Are they for political, social or religious purposes?  What crusade do you think you might start in our school or community?

Read chapters 4 - 6.  Don't forget to title the chapters. Be sure to use your 'post its' to mark examples of exaggeration

Point of View for Chapter 5:  Point of View.doc

Day 3:  Today we are going to focus on Figurative language.  Jerry Spinelli creates wonderful visualizations with all different types of figurative language.  Let's review the different types of figurative language and see if we can't find an example of each type used in the story!!

Read Chapters 7 - 9.  Find 2 examples each of similes, metaphors, hyperboles and exaggerations.

Day 4:  Today we are going to meet in book club discussion groups!! Read Chapter 10 for homework.

Day 5:  Vocabulary List #1.doc  Today we are going to list all the feats that Maniac has done so far in the book.  How did they make Maniac a legend? Read chapters 11-13.

CONFLICT.doc

Chapters 14-15:  There are many conflicts throughout this story.  As you read today, I want you to think about what some of the conflicts are that we have read about.  When you are done reading, open the document and follow the directions.

Language can create a sensory impression within the reader's mind.  It consists of words and phrases that appeal to the reader's senses.  Writers use sensory detail to help readers imagine how things look, feel, smell, sound, and taste. This is called Imagery. In chapters 14 and 15, Spinelli uses a great deal of imagery to describe this things that Maniac loves about his new life.   Imagery (after chapter 14).doc

Chapter 18 - 21 Maniac Magee.doc

Day 6:    Read Chapters 16 -18. In your E-journal reflect and answer this question:  People of Two Mills behaved differently toward Maniac - some liked him; some disliked him.  Describe how two people from Two Mills behaved differently toward Maniac.  Why do you think Maniac was "blind" to such behavior?  (Be sure to date your entry with today's date)

Day 7:  "The Name Game"  Many of the characters in Maniac Magee have nicknames. The author writes, "Inside his house, a kid gets one name, but on the other side of the door, it's whatever the rest of the world wants to call him." Open the chart and explain why each nickname was given.  The Name Game.doc

Read Chapters 19 - 21.

Create a nickname for yourself and describe what your legend is and how you got your nickname!

Situational Irony occurs when what happens is very different from what is expected to happen.

Examples:

A woman finally pays off her car and the next day it is wrecked and totaled.

The man who was the voice of Bugs Bunny was allergic to carrots.

A woman goes on a diet and the very next day wins a huge chocolate cake.

A lifeguard drowns.

Why is it ironic that Maniac Magee wins pizza for a whole year from Cobble's Corner?

Day 8:  The Knot!!  How did the author use "personification" and "similes" and metaphors to describe Maniac's handling of the Knot?

Day 9:  Before you begin reading Part II, I want you to predict what you think will happen to Maniac in this section.

Read Chapters 22 - 23. Create an attribute web about Grayson.

Day 10: At the beginning of Part II, Jerry Spinelli allows us to see life through the eyes of a baby buffalo!  Have you ever written a story from another person's or thing's point of view?  Before we talk about this part of the book, look up the word "ignorant".  How is the definition different from what you thought?  What was Grayson ignorant about? How can ignorance interfer with acceptance of people's differences?   Read Chapters 24 - 25.  Think about how Jerry Spinelli tells this part of the story.  How is Part II written differently than Part I?

Spinelli creates the character, Grayson through "realistic diaglogue". This is when a character does not speak in Standard English. Grayson is an older man who does not speak "the correct way" all of the time. Find 5 examples of "realistic dialogue" in this part of the book. How does Grayson's dialogue add to the development of his character? Turn and share with a partner.

Read Chapter 26 & 27

Day 11:  In last night's chapters there was some great examples of personification.  Can you pick them out?

Day 12:  Let's read Chapter 28!! The Little Engine That Could and Krimpets!!  What is the significance of Grayson reading The Little Engine That Could?  Grayson and Maniac have each other for companionship.  What do they have in common and how are they different?  What is the significance of Maniac painting a house number on the outside of the band shelter?  Read chapters 29 - 31.

Read chapter 32
